Can I Tow With My BluePrint Engine?
Many customers use their BluePrint Engine in trucks, SUVs, muscle cars, hot rods, and custom builds that may be used for towing. When properly matched to the vehicle and drivetrain, BluePrint Engines can provide excellent towing performance.
Can I Tow During Break-In?
No.
BluePrint recommends avoiding heavy towing during the first:
500 miles
During break-in:
- Vary engine RPM
- Avoid prolonged heavy loads
- Avoid sustained high RPM operation
- Follow the recommended break-in procedure
Once break-in is complete and the oil and filter have been changed, normal towing operations may begin.
What Should I Consider Before Towing?
Successful towing depends on more than just engine horsepower.
Important factors include:
- Vehicle weight
- Trailer weight
- Rear gear ratio
- Transmission type
- Torque converter selection
- Cooling system capacity
- Braking system capacity
Is My Cooling System Important?
Yes.
Towing places additional load on the cooling system.
BluePrint recommends:
- Quality aluminum radiator
- Proper fan shroud
- Electric fans or properly sized mechanical fan
- Adequate airflow through the radiator
- Proper coolant mixture
Monitor engine temperature closely when towing in:
- Hot weather
- Mountainous terrain
- Stop-and-go traffic
What Rear Gear Ratio Works Best For Towing?
Vehicles used primarily for towing generally benefit from:
- 3.55 gears
- 3.73 gears
- 4.10 gears
The ideal gear ratio depends on:
- Engine combination
- Tire size
- Transmission
- Trailer weight
What Transmission Works Best For Towing?
Overdrive transmissions are commonly used for towing applications, including:
- 700R4
- 4L60E
- 4L80E
- 6L80E
- AOD
- 4R70W
Proper transmission cooling is highly recommended.
Should I Install A Transmission Cooler?
Yes.
A supplemental transmission cooler is strongly recommended for vehicles that will be used for:
- Towing
- Frequent hauling
- Mountain driving
- Heavy-duty use
Transmission temperature is one of the biggest factors affecting transmission life.
What Engine Temperature Is Normal While Towing?Engine temperatures may run slightly higher under load.
Most BluePrint Engines normally operate within:
180°F-220°F
while properly equipped with a suitable cooling system.
