Do I Need To Follow The Break-In Procedure If My BluePrint Engine Was Dyno Tested?
One of the most common questions we receive is whether the break-in procedure is still required since the engine was already run on the dyno before shipment. The answer is yes. Even though your BluePrint Engine was dyno tested, the break-in procedure should still be completed after installation
Why Is Break-In Still Required?
During dyno testing, the engine is started, tested, inspected, and verified before shipment.
However, the engine still needs operating time in the vehicle to allow the piston rings to properly seat and establish their final wear pattern.
The break-in period also allows:
- Piston rings to seat properly
- Engine components to mate together under real-world driving conditions
- Proper inspection of the cooling, fuel, and ignition systems after installation
What Break-In Oil Should I Use?
For the first 500 miles, BluePrint recommends:
- Straight 30-weight break-in oil
- Non-synthetic oil
Common recommendations include quality break-in oils from manufacturers such as Driven, AMSOIL, or our BPE.
When Should I Change The Oil?
After the first 500 miles:
- Change the oil and filter
- Switch to the recommended conventional oil for your engine
Many BluePrint engines use:
- 10W-30 conventional oil
Always verify the recommendation for your specific engine package.
Can I Use Synthetic Oil During Break-In?
No.
Synthetic oil is not recommended during the initial break-in period. Synthetic oil may slow the ring seating process and is not recommended for the first 500 miles.
How Should I Drive The Vehicle During Break-In?
During the first 500 miles:
- Vary engine RPM frequently
- Avoid extended periods at one RPM
- Avoid prolonged idling
- Avoid sustained wide-open-throttle operation
- Avoid excessive engine loading
Normal street driving with varying engine speed is ideal.
Marine Applications
For marine applications where mileage cannot be tracked, approximately:
10 hours of operation
is generally considered equivalent to the normal break-in period.
What Should I Inspect During Break-In?
Periodically inspect:
- Engine oil level
- Coolant level
- Fuel system connections

- Belts and hoses
