How Do I Perform A Compression Test On My Engine?

A compression test is one of the most effective ways to evaluate the condition of an engine's cylinders, piston rings, valves, and head gaskets. Before You Begin

You will need:

  • Compression tester
  • Spark plug socket
  • Ratchet and extensions
  • Battery in good condition
  • Pen and paper to record results

Compression Test Procedure

Step 1: Warm The Engine

Start the engine and bring it up to normal operating temperature.

A warm engine will provide the most accurate compression readings.

Step 2: Disable Fuel And Ignition

Disable the fuel and ignition systems to prevent the engine from starting during testing.

This may include:

  • Disabling fuel injection
  • Disconnecting ignition power
  • Disabling the fuel pump

Step 3: Remove All Spark Plugs

Remove all spark plugs from the engine.

Removing all plugs allows the engine to crank consistently and provides more accurate results.

Step 4: Install The Compression Gauge

Thread the compression tester into the first cylinder's spark plug hole.

Hand tighten only.

Step 5: Open The Throttle

Hold the throttle blades fully open during testing.

A closed throttle can significantly reduce compression readings.

Step 6: Crank The Engine

Crank the engine over for approximately 4 to 6 compression strokes.

Watch the gauge and allow the pressure reading to stabilize.

Step 7: Record The Reading

Write down the compression reading for that cylinder.

Step 8: Repeat For Every Cylinder

Move the compression tester to the next cylinder and repeat the process until all cylinders have been tested.

Evaluating The Results

Consistency Is Important

The most important factor is that all cylinders are relatively close to one another.

Large differences between cylinders can indicate:

  • Valve sealing issues
  • Worn piston rings
  • Head gasket concerns
  • Cylinder damage

Low Compression In One Cylinder

A single cylinder with significantly lower compression than the others may indicate:

  • Burnt valve
  • Bent valve
  • Valve sealing issue
  • Damaged piston
  • Head gasket failure

Low Compression In Adjacent Cylinders

Adjacent cylinders with low compression may indicate:

  • Head gasket failure between cylinders

Wet Compression Test

If a cylinder has low compression:

  1. Add a small amount of clean engine oil into the cylinder.
  2. Repeat the compression test.
  3. Compare the results.

Compression Increases

If compression increases significantly, worn piston rings may be contributing to the issue.

Compression Does Not Increase
