# What Are the Torque Specifications and Tightening Sequences for BluePrint Ford, Small Block Chevy, BBC, , Chrysler 408 & 426, and LS Engine Cylinder Heads?

### **Ford 302-347 and 408-427 Cylinder Head Torque Sequence** Tighten head bolts from the center outward using the sequence shown below.

### **Ford 302-347 Head Bolt Torque** Torque the cylinder head bolts using the method appropriate for the fasteners being installed:

- **55 ft-lbs** using a **Torque Stick**
- **70 ft-lbs** using a **Torque Wrench**
- **70 ft-lbs** using a **Torque Wrench with Paint Socket**

### **Ford 408-427 Head Bolt Torque** Torque the cylinder head bolts in four steps:

1. **45 ft-lbs**
2. **70 ft-lbs**
3. **90 ft-lbs**
4. **100 ft-lbs Final Torque**

**![](https://knowledgebase.blueprintengines.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-3.png?width=670&height=352&name=undefined-3.png)**

---

### **Small Block Chevy Cylinder Head Torque Sequence** Follow the numbered sequence shown below, starting with the center fasteners and working outward. **SBC Head Bolt Torque** Torque all cylinder head bolts in three steps:

1. **45 ft-lbs**
2. **55 ft-lbs**
3. **65 ft-lbs Final Torque**

### **SBC Rocker Arm Stud Torque** **Torque rocker arm studs to 45 ft-lbs.** **Important:** Apply an oil-resistant RTV sealant to all intake-side rocker arm studs during installation.

---

### **BBC (PS8012 & PS8013) Cylinder Head Torque Specifications** **Important**

- **Do NOT apply lubricant to the head bolts.**
- **Do NOT remove the factory-applied thread sealer from the bolts.**

### **Torque Procedure**

1. Torque all head bolts to **37 ft-lbs** following the proper tightening sequence.
2. Following the same sequence, back off each bolt **one at a time**.
3. Retorque all bolts to **37 ft-lbs** in sequence.
4. Apply the final angle torque:
     - **Long bolts: +150°**
     - **Short bolts: +90°**
5. Verify final torque using a manual torque wrench:
     - **All bolts should click at 85 ft-lbs.**

### **Important Notes**

- Maintain the specified bolt sequence throughout the procedure.
- Do not lubricate the threads or under-head surfaces of the bolts.
- Do not remove the pre-applied thread sealer.
- Use a manual torque wrench for final verification.

---

### **Chrysler 408 Cylinder Head Torque Specifications** When installing Chrysler 408 cylinder heads, use **moly lubricant** on the fastener threads and under the bolt heads unless otherwise specified by the fastener manufacturer. Torque all cylinder head bolts in the proper tightening sequence using the following three-step procedure:

1. **50 ft-lbs**
2. **105 ft-lbs**
3. **105 ft-lbs Final Torque**

### **Important Notes**

- Apply **moly lubricant** prior to installation.
- Follow the recommended cylinder head bolt tightening sequence.
- Torque all fasteners in stages to ensure even clamping force across the head gasket.
- Use a calibrated torque wrench.
- If aftermarket fasteners are used, follow the manufacturer's specifications if they differ from those listed above.

---

### **Chrysler 426 Cylinder Head Torque Specifications** Proper cylinder head installation is critical for head gasket sealing and consistent clamping force. Follow the torque sequence diagram and complete each pass in the order listed below. **Chrysler 426 Head Bolt Torque Procedure** **First Pass**

- Torque bolts **1-10** to **25 ft-lbs**.
- Torque bolts **11-15** to **15 ft-lbs**.

### **Second Pass**

- Torque bolts **1-10** to **40 ft-lbs**.
- Verify bolts **11-15** remain at **15 ft-lbs**.

### **Third Pass**

- Torque bolts **1-10** to **45 ft-lbs**.
- Mark bolts **1-10** with a paint pen at the **12 o'clock position**.

### **Fourth Pass**

- Rotate bolts **1-10** an additional **+90°**.
- Torque bolts **11-15** to **21 ft-lbs**.

### **Important Notes**

- Follow the Chrysler 426 cylinder head torque sequence diagram throughout the procedure.
- Use a paint marker before the final angle-torque step to provide a visual reference for the 90-degree rotation.
- Complete all four torque passes in order.
- Use a calibrated torque wrench and an angle gauge for the final rotation.
- Verify that each bolt has received the required final torque or angle specification before installation is complete.

---

### **LS Cylinder Head Torque Sequence** Follow the tightening sequence shown in the LS Head Bolt Tightening Sequence diagram. **LS Cylinder Head Torque Procedure** **Short M8 Head Bolts**

- First Pass: **22 ft-lbs**

### **Long M11 Head Bolts**

- First Pass: **22 ft-lbs**
- Second Pass: **(+) 90 degrees**
- Third Pass: **(+) 70 degrees**

### **Important LS Notes**

- Always use the proper torque-angle procedure.
- Torque-to-yield head bolts should not be reused.
- Follow the bolt sequence exactly to ensure proper gasket sealing.

---

### **LS Intake Manifold Bolt Tightening Sequence** Follow the sequence shown in the LS Intake Manifold Bolt Tightening Sequence diagram. **LS Intake Manifold Torque Specification** Torque all intake manifold bolts to:

- **44 in-lbs (5 N·m) First Pass**
- **89 in-lbs (10 N·m) Final Pass**

### Work through the sequence shown and complete both torque passes before installation is considered complete.

---

***Installation Tips***

- Verify all threaded holes are clean and free of debris.
- Apply thread sealant to any fasteners that enter coolant passages.
- Use the lubricant specified by the fastener manufacturer.
- Always torque fasteners in multiple stages.
- Use a calibrated torque wrench.
- Follow aftermarket fastener manufacturer specifications when they differ from those listed above.
