What Is the Notch Mark on the Distributor For and What Does It Line Up To?

BluePrint Engines adds a reference notch to the distributor housing after the engine's ignition timing has been set on the dyno. This mark is used to indicate the distributor position at the time of dyno testing.

What Does the Distributor Notch Line Up To?

A corresponding notch can be found on the engine block near the base of the distributor. When the distributor is in the same position it was during dyno testing, the notch on the distributor housing should align with the notch on the block.

What Is the Purpose of the Notches?

The distributor and block notches serve as reference marks to help identify the distributor orientation that was used when the engine was timed on the dyno. These marks can be helpful if the distributor is removed and needs to be reinstalled in its original position.

Can the Notches Be Used to Set Timing?

No. The notches are reference marks only and should not be used as a substitute for proper ignition timing procedures. If the distributor has been removed, rotated, or timing is otherwise in question, timing should be verified and adjusted using the appropriate timing specifications and procedures for the engine.
