# What Should I Check Before My First BluePrint Engine Startup?

### ***Why Is A Pre-Start Inspection Important?***

**A complete pre-start inspection helps identify installation issues before they become engine problems.**

Many startup issues are caused by:

- Low battery voltage
- Poor ground connections
- Incorrect ignition timing
- Fuel delivery problems
- Cooling system concerns
- Unplugged sensors or wiring connections

Verifying these items before startup can prevent unnecessary troubleshooting and warranty concerns.

### ***Is The Engine Properly Filled With Oil?***

**Yes, oil level should be verified before cranking the engine.** Before startup:

- Verify the crankcase has been filled with the correct oil.
- Confirm the oil level is at the FULL mark on the dipstick.
- Verify the oil filter is installed and tightened properly.
- Check for oil leaks around:
    - Oil filter
    - Oil pressure sender
    - Oil pan
    - Valve covers

BluePrint Engines recommends following the oil requirements shown in the engine installation guide and applicable technical support documentation.

### ***Have You Verified All Required Ground Connections?***

**Proper engine grounding is critical.** Poor grounds can cause:

- Hard starting
- No-start conditions
- Ignition issues
- EFI communication problems
- Charging system concerns

Verify:

- Battery negative cable connected to engine block
- Engine-to-chassis ground strap installed
- Chassis-to-battery ground connection secure
- Ground surfaces are clean and free from paint or corrosion

BluePrint Engines specifically identifies proper ground connections as an important installation requirement.

 Is The Fuel System Ready?

**The fuel system should be inspected before the first crank attempt.** Check:

- Fuel lines routed safely away from exhaust heat
- Fuel filter installed correctly
- Fuel pressure meets the requirements of your carbureted or EFI system
- No visible fuel leaks
- Fuel tank contains clean, fresh fuel

If your vehicle uses an EFI system, verify all fuel pump wiring and relays function correctly before startup. Is The Cooling System Ready? **The cooling system should be completely filled and checked for leaks before startup.** Verify:

- Radiator is full
- Coolant reservoir is properly filled
- Heater hoses are connected
- All hose clamps are tightened
- Cooling fan wiring is operational
- Fan-to-radiator clearance is adequate

BluePrint Engines provides coolant recommendations and cooling-system guidance within its technical resources.

### ***Have You Checked Ignition Timing?***

**Initial timing should always be verified before startup.** Before starting:

- Confirm distributor installation is correct.
- Verify spark plug wires match the engine firing order.
- Double-check all ignition connections.
- Verify coil and distributor wiring.

BluePrint notes that timing should be checked even though engines are dyno tested because components can be moved during shipping or installation.

### ***Is The Battery Fully Charged?***

**A fully charged battery is strongly recommended.** Before startup:

- Verify battery voltage is sufficient.
- Confirm battery terminals are tight.
- Inspect starter cable connections.
- Verify starter engagement.

Low battery voltage can create misleading symptoms that appear to be ignition or fuel problems. This is particularly important for EFI-equipped engines.

### ***Have You Inspected Wiring And Sensors?***

**All wiring connections should be verified before startup.** Inspect:

- Coolant temperature sensor connections
- Oil pressure sender connections
- MAP sensor connections
- IAT sensor connections (EFI applications)
- Injector connectors
- Ignition connectors
- Grounds

Pay special attention to connectors that may have been disconnected during installation.

### ***What Should I Watch During The First Startup?***

**Monitor engine operation continuously during the first few minutes.** Watch for:

### Oil Pressure

- Confirm oil pressure appears quickly after startup.
- Shut the engine off immediately if oil pressure does not develop.

### Coolant Temperature

- Monitor temperature as the engine warms up.
- Check for leaks and trapped air.

### Fuel Leaks

- Inspect fuel lines, fittings, carburetor, rails, and connections.

### Unusual Noises

- Investigate any severe knocking, grinding, or metal-to-metal sounds immediately.

### Charging Voltage

- Confirm the alternator is charging properly.

If any major concern is observed, shut the engine down and inspect the system before continuing operation. What Is Normal During Initial Startup? The following conditions may be normal during early operation:

- Light smoke from protective coatings on exhaust components
- Minor odors from new parts heating for the first time
- Initial coolant level changes as trapped air purges
- Minor adjustment of idle speed and timing

If these conditions persist or worsen, further inspection may be required. First Startup Checklist Before turning the key, verify

✅ Oil level checked

✅ Battery fully charged

✅ Fuel system leak-free

✅ Cooling system filled

✅ Ground straps installed

✅ Ignition timing verified

✅ Spark plug wires correctly routed

✅ All sensors connected

✅ No loose wiring

✅ No tools or shop rags left in the engine compartment
