What Should My Oil Pressure Be During Break-In and Normal Operation? Applies To: BluePrint Engines SBC, BBC, SBF, and Mopar Crate Engines

Overview Oil pressure will vary based on engine temperature, oil viscosity, engine speed (RPM), bearing clearances, and gauge accuracy. Because of these variables, there is no single oil pressure specification that applies to every BluePrint engine. A stable oil pressure reading that increases with RPM is more important than achieving an exact pressure value.

 Important: Use non-synthetic oil only during the break-in period. BluePrint Engines recommends SAE 30 Break-In Oil for break-in and 10W-30 conventional (non-synthetic) oil for normal operation after break-in. Synthetic oil should not be used during break-in. 

 

Recommended Oil

Break-In Period

Use SAE 30 Break-In Oil for the initial break-in period.

After Break-In

Change the oil and filter and switch to 10W-30 conventional oil for normal operation.

Do not use synthetic oil during the break-in period.

 

 

Oil Pressure During Break-In

Because SAE 30 oil is typically thicker at operating temperature than 10W-30, oil pressure may be slightly higher during the break-in period.

Cold Start

  • Typically 55-75 PSI

Hot Idle

  • Typically 20-40 PSI

Wide Open Throttle (WOT)

  • Typically 50-70 PSI

Oil Pressure After Break-In

After switching to 10W-30 oil and accumulating operating time, pressures may decrease slightly while remaining completely normal.

Hot Idle

  • Typically 15-35 PSI

Cruise (2,000-3,000 RPM)

  • Typically 40-60 PSI

Wide Open Throttle (WOT)

  • Typically 50-70 PSI

General Rule of Thumb

A healthy BluePrint engine should maintain approximately:

10 PSI of oil pressure for every 1,000 RPM

Examples:

  • 800 RPM idle = 10+ PSI minimum
  • 3,000 RPM = 30+ PSI minimum
  • 6,000 RPM = 60+ PSI minimum

Most BluePrint Engines will operate above these minimum values.

When Should I Be Concerned?

Contact BluePrint Engines Technical Support if:
  • Oil pressure suddenly drops from its normal operating range.
  • Oil pressure does not increase with engine RPM.
  • Hot idle pressure consistently falls below 10 PSI.
  • The engine develops abnormal knocking, ticking, or bearing noise.
  • The low oil pressure warning light illuminates.

Before diagnosing an engine concern, always verify oil pressure with a known-good mechanical gauge and confirm the engine is at the proper oil level.
