Where Do I Install My Oil Pressure Sender on My BluePrint Engine?
One of the most common installation questions we receive is where to install an oil pressure sender or gauge. Most BluePrint engines have multiple oil pressure port locations available depending on your application and gauge setup.
Small Block Chevy (SBC)
Preferred Location
The most common oil pressure sender location is directly above or near the oil filter mounting area on the driver's side of the block.
Alternate Location
Many SBC engines also have a port at the rear of the engine behind the intake manifold. If one port is already plugged, the other may be used.
Port Size
Most BluePrint SBC oil pressure ports use a 1/4" NPT fitting.
Big Block Chevy (BBC)
Preferred Location
The oil pressure sender should typically be installed in the port directly above the oil filter housing.
Alternate Location
Some BBC engines also have an additional oil pressure port available near the filter housing that may be used depending on accessory clearance and gauge requirements.
Small Block Ford (302 / 306 / 347)
Preferred Location
The recommended oil pressure port is located on the front driver's side of the block near the mechanical fuel pump area.
Note
Depending on the application, an extension fitting may be required to provide clearance for the sender unit.
LS Engines
LS engines use the factory-style LS oil pressure sensor location at the rear of the engine block behind the intake manifold. When using aftermarket gauges, adapter fittings may be required.
Can I Use Either Oil Pressure Port?Yes.
Many BluePrint Engines have more than one oil pressure port. A plugged port does not indicate a problem. BluePrint often seals unused locations and allows the installer to choose the location that best fits their application.
Tips for Installation- Use the correct NPT fitting size for your sender.
- Apply a thread sealant approved for oil systems.
- Do not overtighten brass fittings.
- Verify sender clearance from headers, steering components, and engine accessories.
- If using a mechanical gauge, route tubing away from exhaust heat.
