Why Can I Not Use a Fan Spacer or Fan Clutch With My Engine?
BluePrint Engines does not recommend the use of fan spacers, extended fan adapters, or mechanical fan clutch assemblies unless specifically engineered and approved for the application. These components can place excessive loads on the water pump and front accessory drive system, leading to premature component failure.
Why Are Fan Spacers Not Recommended?
Fan spacers increase the distance between the fan blade and the water pump shaft. This added leverage creates additional stress on the water pump bearings and shaft.
Potential issues include:
- Premature water pump bearing failure
- Water pump seal leaks
- Water pump shaft damage or breakage
- Increased vibration at higher RPM
- Fan imbalance concerns
- Damage to pulleys, belts, or accessory drive components
Even small increases in fan offset can significantly increase the load applied to the water pump bearings.
Why Are Mechanical Fan Clutches Not Recommended?
Many fan clutch assemblies are heavier than a direct-mount fan and introduce additional rotating mass. This extra weight and inertia can place increased loads on the water pump bearings, especially during engine acceleration and deceleration.
Potential issues include:
- Accelerated water pump wear
- Increased bearing loads
- Excessive vibration
- Reduced reliability at higher engine speeds
Recommended Cooling Fan Options
BluePrint Engines recommends:
- Direct-mount mechanical fans that fit the application without spacers
- Properly sized electric cooling fans What Fan Do We Recommend Running With SBC Deluxe Dress Engines (With Water Pump)?
- Fan and shroud combinations designed to maintain correct fan-to-radiator positioning
When selecting a cooling fan setup, ensure adequate clearance to all components while minimizing unnecessary load on the water pump.
Warranty Considerations
Failures related to the use of fan spacers, fan clutch assemblies, or other non-approved cooling fan modifications may not be covered under warranty if the failure is determined to be caused by the added load or resulting damage.
