# Why Does My Starter Stay Engaged After The Engine Starts?

### *** Why Does The Starter Stay Engaged?***

**The most common cause is a wiring issue in the starter circuit.** This can happen when:

- The ignition switch remains in the START position
- A starter relay is wired incorrectly
- The starter solenoid sticks
- Wiring is connected to the wrong terminal
- An aftermarket ignition system is miswired

 What Should I Do If This Happens? **Turn the engine off immediately.** Continuing to operate the vehicle may cause damage to:

- The starter motor
- The starter drive gear
- The flexplate or flywheel
- Wiring and electrical components

 How Do I Check For Wiring Problems? Inspect the starter wiring and verify:

- Battery cable is connected to the correct large terminal
- Start signal wire is connected to the correct solenoid terminal
- No wires are loose or contacting other terminals
